COHASSET – Angela Mitchell of Weymouth got two surprises this week – a makeover and a homecoming.
Mitchell was one of four military wives given the royal treatment on Sunday at Eye Candy in Cohasset. The women received free eye-lash extensions, a mini-makeover and a professional photo shoot so they could send the pictures to their deployed husbands.
“We’re pro women supporting women,” said Pauline Bartkus, the shop owner. “We wanted to make them feel beautiful.”
The event was to honor the sacrifice made by the spouses who are holding up the homefront while their husbands are away on duty. Bartkus said it was her way to help the women celebrate Valentine’s Day.
A full set of eye-lash extensions starts at $170. To set the mood Sunday, Bartkus decorated the beauty bar with pink and red heart-shaped decorations. She also served snacks and champagne and each woman got to spend a good chunk of time relaxing in one of the salon’s oversized lounge chairs. It can take between two and three hours to apply the lash extensions.
“A lot of time you put yourself on the back burner, so it’s nice to have that time to be pampered,” said Boston resident Nicole Mahoney, a nurse whose husband, Michael, served in the military for several years before becoming a police officer. She has lived on military bases in Colorado and Hawaii.
Alyssa Giorgio, a Pembroke resident whose fiancé, Nick White, left a few days ago for a year overseas with the National Guard infantry branch, was also thankful for the support of Eye Candy, which also has a location in Marshfield.
“A lot of people don’t appreciate what we deal with back home,” she said. “It’s really nice to think about the other part of the family, so I really appreciate this.”
Mitchell said when she first entered for the chance to win the day of beauty, her husband, Brandon, was stationed more than 3,500 miles away at Ramstein Air Base in Germany. She had no idea that by the time Sunday came, her husband would be home baby-sitting their 2-year-old daughter, Georgia. It was a much-needed day of daddy-daughter bonding, Mitchell said. And, a day of pampering for her.
